Nelson Mandela fought all his life long for equality between blacks and whites in his country, South Africa. He died yesterday November 5th.
Madiba died. Madaba was his clan name but he was also known as Tata (The father). His fight against racism, poverty, inequality, transformed the face of his country, South Africa, now a democracy.
He also fought to bring up racial understanding.
When Nelson Mandela was born in 1918 in Mvezo, his parents named him Rolihlahla , it means « troublemaker » !
At the age of 7, when he entered school his mistress gave him an English name : Nelson .
At that time, his country, South Africa, was dominated by the white power. Blacks and whites were strictly separated. This unfair system was called apartheid .
In 1944, Mandela joined the ANC political party. Mandela led operations of non-violent resistance against apartheid but in 1961, he changed his mind and chose the armed struggle.
In 1962, he was arrested and spent 27 years in prison ! He was released on the 11th February 1990.
He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 with the President of South Africa, de Klerk. He was elected President of South Africa in 1994. He ruled the country for 5 years only but his influence remains high in South Africa and worldwide.
À noter : Dimanche 08 décembre, à 20 heures 45, France 2 diffusera le film « Invictus », réalisé par Clint Eastwood en 2009 avec Morgan Freeman dans le rôle de « Madiba », le film décrit la façon dont Mandela a misé sur le sport et la Coupe du Monde de rugby de 1995 pour unifier une Afrique du Sud alors profondément divisée.
